Fetching Christmas Friendship with Newton's Nook Designs

Hello everyone!  I am getting so excited for Christmas!  It's so near!  Are you all done with your shopping yet?  How about your baking?  I still have lots of that to do.  Just about all of my cards are completed though, including this one featured on the Newton's Nook Designs Blog today using the cute lab from 'Fetching Friendship':

Christmas Labrador card by Crafty Math Chick | Fetching Friendship by Newton's Nook Designs

I made this one for a friend who has a black lab to match the tag I made for her during the 25 days of Christmas tags hop hosted by Tracey McNeely.  I forget which company made the patterned paper, Echo Park or Doodlebug.  The holly border was created with an EK Success edger punch and I added a Santa hat I purchased from Hobby Lobby and added three rhinestone holly berries and two free hand cut holly leaves to embellish the hat's brim.  I hope my friend likes it.  The 'Happy Howl-i-days' sentiment, which I LOOOOOVE, is from NND's Canine Christmas set, easily my most used sentiment of all.

Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year.  Thank you so much for stopping by my blog, your views and comments mean so much to me!

Cheers!

Deck the Halls with Inky Paws! Newton's Nook Designs Holiday Blog Hop

Welcome to the 2015 'Deck the Halls with Inky Paws' Blog Hop!  This is when all of us on the Newton's Nook Designs Team, along with a few special guests, get to get our paws inky and show off how much we love NND and inspire you with some holiday themed creations.

As an extra bonus this year, Jen is releasing a bonus set' Whispering Pines' - PURR-fect for creating cards that make it look like you painstakingly watercolored for hours!

I had SO much fun playing with this set, and created this rustic looking card for your viewing pleasure:

Snowy Scene card created by Crafty Math Chick | Whispering Pines by Newton's Nook Designs

I thought this woodgrain patterned paper from My Mind's Eye was prefect for creating a rustic backdrop.  I stamped the kitty in orange (after all, Newton is a ginger kitty!) and the pup in Chocolate chip.  I stamped the trees in Handsome Hunter and stamped the falling snow image over them with white craft ink.  Then I used a glue pen and sprinkled white flock all over - the cool thing?  Some of the flock stuck to the white craft ink over the trees enhancing the snowy effect - I love it!  I hope you do too!

Since this is a snowy scene I am also entering this card in Simon Says Stamp's Wednesday Challenge: Let It Snow.

Would you like to win one of two $10 store credits to Newton's Nook Designs?

Here's how to win:

Newton's Nook Designs' Inky Paws Challenge #27 ~ Kraft & Sparkle

Greetings!  Today I have the honor of being featured on the Newton's Nook Blog and I wanted so share a card I made for the current Inky Paws Challenge: Kraft paper & Sparkle!

Merry Sparkly Christmas Card by Crafty Math Chick | Holiday Wishes & Winged Wishes by Newton's Nook Designs

I have been loving the look of sparkly red and sparkly green on black cardstock backgrounds lately, so I used the sentiment from Holiday Wishes and the birdies from Winged Wishes and heat set them using red tinsel embossing powder to create the center panel, which I then matted with a sheet of red foil cardstock I purchased from Michaels last year during post-holiday clearance.  To create the sparkly striped background I simply took a ruler and a tape runner and created lines and then sprinkled some super sparkly green glitter over the sticky portions - VOILA!  Easy sparkly background complete!

Are you ready to get your paws inky with us and play along to win a prize?  The Challenge winner will receive a $10 store credit to Newton's Nook Designs' online store and an Inky Paws Challenge Top Pick Badge to add to your blog!  AND IF there are more than 15 participants, Jen will choose TWO winners, so be sure to tell your friends to play along too!  Please visit the Newton's Nook Designs' blog HERE for all the details!

Can't wait to see what YOU create!  Have a happy Thanksgiving!!

25 Days of Christmas Tags with Newton's Nook Designs

Hello Crafty Friends!  Newton's Nook Designs is participating in the 25 Days of Christmas Tags event generously organized by Tracy McNeely, where she showcases Christmas tags created with a different company's supplies for 25 straight days.  Isn't that cool?  There are lots of prizes and oodles of inspiration along the way so I hope you will check it out.  Today, Newton's Nook Designs is being highlighted.

Being the huge dog lover than I am (Ty even gives gifts to his doggie friends) I wanted to show off some of Jen's adorable canine illustrations, and selected a lab pup from 'Fetching Friendship' to show how you can really use ANY doggie (or kitty) and turn it into a holiday image by adding a cute Santa hat (as I did here, it was a 'Make it Christmas' embellishment from Hobby Lobby) or scarf:

Labrador Santa pup tag by Crafty Math Chick | Fetching Friendship by Newton's Nook Designs

The tag itself is one of Spellbinders' ornament shaped Nestabilities dies, and I created the holly using a Martha Stewart punch for the leaves and sequins with rhinestones centers or the holly berries.  I tied some silver cording around the ornament top and then tied some tinsel ribbon in festive colors at the base for some added sparkle.  The 'Happy Howl-idays sentiment is from NND's 'Canine Christmas' set and the little 'to: & from:' (I LOVE that little font!) is from NND's new 'Jolly Tags' set.  I have a dear friend who has a black lab pup; she will be finding this attached to his gift this year from Ty.

Hope this tag with inspired you and help start kindling the holiday spirit!  Enjoy!

Newton's Nook Designs' November Release ~ Day 2

Welcome come to the second day of reveals for Newton's Nook Designs' November Release.  Today we present a fun new sentiment set with lots of fun, different styles which accommodate oodles of seasons & holidays -- introducing Simply Seasonal:

I was SO excited when I saw that Jen included Hanukkah in the mix, so I wanted to show that holiday (which is wicked early this year - the first night is December 6th!!) a little love and created some background patterned paper using this set:

Happy Hanukkah Menorah card by Crafty Math Chick | Simply Seasonal by Newton's Nook Designs

I used the negative die cuts of the menorah for my family's Hanukkah cards last year, so I saved all the menorah cut outs knowing I could use them this year (every day is Earth Day!).  So I took one and highlighted it with a piece of Ballet Blue cardstock and adhered golden sequins as 'flames' on top of all nine candles as well as a few iridescent blue ones here and there to fill in some gappy white spaces - TA DA!  Easy peasy fun Hanukkah card!

Would you like to win a 'Simply Seasonal' stamp set?

Newton's Nook Designs' November Release ~ Day 1

Welcome to the first day of reveals for Newton's Nook Designs' November Release!  Today's set will making creating fun & festive holiday tags easy peasy -- introducing Jolly Tags (which has a purrfectly coordinating die too!)

(Do you SEE the sweet little cardinal on the tip of the snowman's carrot nose?!!  EEP!!)  I had SO much fun creating a bunch of tags as well as a little box to hold them all:

Christmas Tags & box by Crafty Math Chick | Jolly Tags by Newton's Nook Designs

I really enjoyed coloring in all these cute tag images with my Copic markers and adding little rhinestone accents and glitter.  Mr. Snowman even got a petite pom pom at the end of his hat.  And they all fit in this little 2" x 3" x 1/2" box I created to house them - I thought it would make a nice pre-Christmas gift, perhaps for a friend who isn't as crafty and might not make tags herself.  What do you think?

Get Well Soon

Hello everyone!  I received some sad news recently, a friend, who is one of the most positive people I know, is having a medical struggle.  In the hopes of cheering her, I made her this card using kitties from Newton's Antics (which has a matching die BTW, which I also used, so handy!) & Newton's Sick Day:

Get Well Soon Support Kitties Card by Crafty Math Chick | Newton's Antics & Newton's Sick Day by Newton's Nook Designs

I wanted to include a little something in the card, so I found a pattern for a support ribbon by the Crochetbug HERE in the appropriate color and crocheted a small ribbon for my friend.  I didn't want to adhere it to the card and make the back all sticky in case she wanted to repurpose it.  So I stacked two 1/4" Pop It's on top of one another to bring the kitties up to a 1/8" height, which is the width of the ribbon, and strategically placed one kitty at the top and one kitty at the bottom so that they hold the ribbon in place during card viewing but it can also be easily removed and pinned on a label or a hat or tucked into a pocket as a little reminder that she is strong and that I am thinking of her and praying for a successful treatment and a smooth & speedy recovery and that I care about her very much.

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by my blog!  Have a great day!

Newton's Nook Designs Holiday Release ~ Day 4

Welcome back for the FOURTH (WOO HOO!) and final day of Newton's Nook Designs' Holiday Release.  I am SOOOO in love with today's set - MORE FOXES!!!  EEEEE!!  Introducing 'Fox Hollow':

For some reason, when I first saw this set, I envisioned the gentle fox sleeping peacefully on top of the Earth, like this:

Peaceful Fox on Earth card by Crafty Math Chick | Fox Hollow by Newton's Nook Designs

I couldn't find a globe die or an image of the Earth in any of my Cricut cartridges, so I did my best to cut out the land in green free hand (hope you geography majors out there will be kind, cutting out the continents is trickier than I originally imagines) after punched circles from green & blue cardstock.  I think it loos pretty good considering I did it using scissors...  Ty frequently sleeps in this cute position too, dogs and foxes are related after all, do your dogs sleep like this too?

I also envisioned the side view fox looking up at a starry sky, taking a deep breath, and enjoying the cool winter air and sense of goodwill towards men (or foxes in this case) and peace on Earth that is so prominent this time of year.  I was excited to bring that vision to life with this card:

Happy Winter Fox card by Crafty Math Chick | Fox Hollow by Newton's Nook Designs

This is another card where I 'let the patterned paper do the work for me,' starting me off with a snowflake flurry filled sky.  Of course, I added plenty of my own heat embossing, rhinestones and sequin elements.  The snowdrift was die cut from pre-glittered white cardstock (the sparkle isn't showing up well in this photo, but it is there IRL).  Of all the cards I made for this release, thee two are my favorites!

And in case you didn't notice - this set has coordinating DIES too!  A little tip: I leave the dies for the main images stuck together, removing only the smaller pieces with a scissors, and run the whole thing through my Cuttlebug at once - I stamp them all right away and put the ones I don't use immediately in the backside of the plastic envelope for the corresponding NND stamp set - that way if I need to whip up a card super quick, some images are all set, ready to go!  :)

Newton's Nook Designs Holiday Release ~ Day 3

Welcome back to the THIRD day of Newton's Nook Designs' Holiday Release Reveals!  Today's set is going to thrill all you Newton & kitty lovers out there - introducing Newton's Christmas Cuddles AND the matching dies too!

I have a confession - I have a LOT of designer paper, more than I could probably use in a lifetime, so I am trying to make more of an effort to use more of it rather than hoarding it.  So the 'technique' I invoked for today's card I call 'making your patterned paper work for you' where you find papers that matches your stamps in fun ways.  Here I used another slice from a Recollections holiday stack.  I thought about the display windows and decorations that they set up in the middle of shopping malls and when I saw the bottom border of this sheet of cardstock I envisioned a display of BIG presents or maybe presents lined up under the tree with Newton peeking out of his gift box hidden among them:

Newton kitty peeking from gift box card by Crafty Math Chick | Newton's Christmas Cuddles by Newton's Nook Designs

I feel kinda bad not using the images where Newton was actually 'cuddling' like the title of the set, but I wanted to make sure this image got some love too - and it is perfect for any gift giving occasion really - birthdays, anniversaries, valentine's day, you name it!

So, are you like me?  Do you have a lot of patterned paper stashed away?  More than you can use?  Or am I the only one?

Newton's Nook Designs Holiday Release ~ Day Two

Welcome back for the second reveal hop day for Newton's Nook Designs' Holiday Release!  Since Jen's Flaky Family Flamingo set was such a hit she decided to design a holiday set using her pretty pink feathered friends - introducing 'Festive Flamingos':

Aren't they sweet?!!  I decided to combine the adorable wreath-wearing flamingo with some Recollections patterned paper with pink sparkly trees on it for my card:

Sparkly Pink Flamingo Christmas Card by Crafty Math Chick | Festive Flamingos by Newton's Nook Designs

I wish you could see this card in person, those trees and the Stickles I added to the punched icicle border at the top and to hot pink wreath (I know it looks red in this picture) sparkles SO MUCH in real life!

Newton's Nook Designs' Holiday Release ~ Day 1

Welcome to the first day of Newton's Nook Designs' October Release!  Jen has created some ADORABLE sets for you this month, you'll want 'em ALL!  Today she has decided to sneak a whimsical set of animal couples - prefect for the holidays, valentine's day, any time to you to let someone know you love them.  Introducing 'Holiday Smooches':

I was inspired by this pretty wreath ornament I saw Chari Moss create years ago to make a wreath ornament (not sure you can really call it an ornament, it is about 5-6 inches in diameter) of my own:

Smooching Polar Bears Wreath Ornament by Crafty Math Chick | Holiday Smooches by Newton's Nook Designs

I wrapped a sheer ribbon around the wreath (purchased from the dried naturals department at Michaels) and tied it to create a hanger, then I took a piece of red tinsel ribbon and tied it to the base of the hanger for a pop of color and sparkle.  The 'holly berries' were part of one of those holiday picks - I simply cut off some of the wire stems off and woe them through the wreath (the wire stems bents nice and easily to secure them in place!)  I was going to add punched holly leaves around them but thought it looked better this way.  Then I stamped the bears and doves and colored them with my Copic markers and fussy cut them out by hand and nestled the polar bears into a cotton ball 'snowbank':

Smooching Polar Bears Wreath Ornament by Crafty Math Chick | Holiday Smooches by Newton's Nook Designs

and hung the love birds with a silver cord tied around the wreath so that the mistletoe dangled above them:

So, what do you think?  Would you hang something like this on your door or tree?  Should I make more of them with different critters?  It was really quite easy and fun to make, I hope you like it!

Newton's Nook Designs Sponsors The Hop to Stop Domestic Violence

Today it is my turn to post on the Newton's Nook Designs blog and I wanted to use this opportunity to let you know about a blog hop going on (Newton's Nook Designs is one of the sponsors too!  WOO HOO!  Aren't Jen & Jeff crazy generous?!!) to increase awareness about domestic violence -- The Hop To STOP Domestic Violence, hope you will check it out HERE.  PURPLE is featured as it represents Domestic Violence Awareness and it is National Domestic Violence Awareness month!  Did you know 1 out of every 3 women experience domestic violence in their lifetimes?  One in THREE!  That's a HUGE number, and quite tragic in my opinion.  And not everyone affected by domestic violence is female!  Please stop by Becca Cruger's Blog for all the details of the hop and to learn about how YOU can participate, show off that purple, raise awareness for this important issue and perhaps win one of $500 worth of prizes too!

I decided to incorporate my purple in a birthday card for my MIL using images and sentiments from NND's Winged Wishes and Holiday Wishes:

Purple birdies birthday card by Crafty Math Chick | Winged Wishes & Holiday Wishes by Newton's Nook Designs

I used one of Martha Stewart's punch-around-the-page punch kits to create the fancy shell border for the  the purple (Blackberry Bliss actually) cardstock and though it would look regal placed on top of some silver foil to really make the shell pattern stand out.  My husband loves heat embossing, he thinks it looks so classy & elegant, so I decide to use it on his Mother's card.  My in-laws have more CAS-style tastes, so I tailored the card to fit their preferences.  I hope you like it!

If you have extra cards in your stash Community Violence Intervention Center in Grand Forks, ND, a non-profit center that provides emergency shelter, legal advocacy, housing assistance and therapy, is happy to accept them for the people who seek their help.  Becca has more info. on her blog about that.  Thanks so much for stopping by, and remember...

If heaven forbid you ever experience domestic violence yourself, PLEASE reach out for help and call the 24/7 confidential National Domestic Violence Helpline at 1-800-799-7233

Newton's Nook Designs' September Release ~ Final Day

Welcome back for the last day of Newton's Nook Designs' September Release!  Today we debut a fun & festive fall & Halloween set featuring my favorite symbol of the season - Pumpkins!!  Introducing 'Pick A Pumpkin':

And did I mention it has a DIE that coordinates PURRfectly too?!!  ;)

Cool right?  I decide to make a few Halloween cards with today's sneaked supplies:

Pumpkin Cards created by Crafty Math Chick | Pick a Pumpkin by Newton's Nook Designs

The first card I just had fun playing with traditional Halloween colors and all the patterns Jen included in the set along with the coordinating die (I think the stem looks pretty just cut out without the stamping!):

Pumpkin Trio Card created by Crafty Math Chick | Pick a Pumpkin by Newton's Nook Designs

Here's a tip if you need to crank out a lot of mini cards or tags FAST - you can use the the pumpkin and jack-o-lantern face on the same piece of orange cardstock and if you adhere it to black cardstock the 'carved' face shows through without having to cut the facial features out separately and glue them in place. like I did here in this mini Halloween card (I just love making little 3" x 3" mini cards!  They are so cute to tuck into lunch boxes, presents, etc.).  So for this card all you need to do is hold the pumpkin & face dies in place with a little washi or painter's tape on a piece of orange cardstock and do the same with the stem die on a teenie scrap of green or brown cardstock - run it through your die cut machine ONCE and adhere in place - VOILA!  Easy peasy!

A little something for everyone, am I right?  I could not resist giving that CUTE bulldog a little love and made a birthday card for one of my many nephews:

Bulldog Referee Birthday Card by Crafty Math Chick | Touchdown Tails by Newton's Nook Designs

Seriously, isn't he just ADORABLE?!!  I used some sports-themed papers from and stamped the sentiments and punched them out with a banner punch and used Martha Stewart's grass border punch on the grass patterned paper, LOL!  I love that this particular oval that I stamped the bulldog into has a slight football shape to it as well....
